Why I Love Using Reader’s Theater to Teach Bible Stories in Kindergarten & First Grade

September 18, 2026

Hello!

Welcome to my world of early childhood education. I'm currently a Junior Kindergarten teacher (4-5 year olds), but have recently taught kindergarten, and preschoo 3's. My classroom integrates play based centers with hands on learning.

Hi, I'm Rachel Resto, an early childhood educator Hi, I'm Rachel Resto, an early childhood educator who believes the best learning begins with curiosity. 💛

One of my favorite classroom areas is the inquiry space—a place where children ask questions, explore, and discover through hands-on learning. It doesn't have to be elaborate to inspire meaningful thinking!

I've shared some of my favorite tips for creating an engaging inquiry space that encourages curiosity, independence, and joyful learning. I hope it inspires your own classroom!

Do you have an inquiry space? I'd love to hear what your students are exploring—share in the comments! 👇

These are some of my favorite hands-on fall activities, from cracking acorns and hammering golf tees into pumpkins to punching shapes from colorful leaves. They're simple to set up, fun to explore, and build strong little hands along the way!

✨ Save this reel for your fall centers and tell me which activity are you trying first?

Little Hands =Strong Hands! Small punches, big l Little Hands =Strong Hands!

Small punches, big learning! Shape punches give our young learners a playful way to practice:
*Hand and finger strength for everyday tasks and future writing
*Hand-eye coordination as they position the paper and press
*Using both hands together as the child practices using one to hold, one to punch
*Shape recognition and math vocabulary
*Focus, patience, and problem-solving
*Creativity as they turn their paper shapes into art, patterns, and designs

PRO TIP provide small snack sized Ziploc bags so the kids can collect and take their punches home.

Each squeeze brings a chance to try again, work independently, and celebrate “I did it!” moments. So much learning packed into one satisfying little punch! ❤️

Here, children copied words from a book, “read” its pages, and followed their curiosity. Simple materials, time to wonder, and the freedom to explore. This is play based learning in action.

Hosting a Stuffie Sleepover is a highlight of the Hosting a Stuffie Sleepover is a highlight of the year. We begin with a PJ day and the kids bring a stuffed animal that can stay overnight.

After school, we set the stuffies up to take pictures as if they were the kids in the classroom. They go to specials, play with toys, do math and literacy games, and finally hear the book I will read the next day.

As the night goes on, I send pictures to the students through Seesaw until I tuck them in for bed. The kids find it hysterical, and I say things like "Your stuffies were so well behaved last night" etc.
